Bang Bang Club

A refreshingly rough little rock club in an overly polished part of Mitte. Their smart booking policies - most local and international indie acts - and fine sound system ensure a full-house most nights. It’s located in a dark, cave-like railway arch beneath Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station, so getting home after a late show is less of a problem. Neue Promenade 10, Mitte, Tel 030 604 053 10, www.bangbang-club.de

Barbie Deinhoff’s

This funky boudoirstyle watering hole offers fun and frolics for gay and straight clientele alike. Amongst a cluster of mirror balls, salvaged airplane and car seats nestles the bar, serving a new list of scrumptious summer cocktails and on weekends coffee specialties, cakes, cookies and chai. With art exhibitions, regular DJs - playing anything from indie to minimal electro - and a podium for live performance and alternative art, Barbie Deinhoff’s lives up to its motto - ‘Where being different, makes a difference.’ Schlesische Str. 16, U-Bhf Schlesisches Tor, www.barbiedeinhoff.de, Mon-Fri 18:00-late, Sat-Sun 12:00-late, cash only

Kaffee Burger

This household name in Berlin doesn’t serve up anything in the way of burgers, but drinks, great live music and DJ nights (including the famed Russendisko). Previously a popular GDR writers’ meeting place, this late-night watering-hole also welcomes all sorts of weird and wonderful events in a run-down kitsch interior, including Exberliner’s monthly music and performance nights (always the last Wednesday of the month, kicking off again on August 29), so you can be sure we’re not biased at all! Kaffee Burger, Torstr. 60, U-Bhf Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Tel 2804 6495, www.kaffeeburger.de, Mon-Fri 20:00-late, Fri-Sat 21:00-late

Knaack Club

Magnet Club

Quasimodo

Stereo 33

The entrance appears big enough only to house a public toilet but behind its door Stereo 33 hides a den of delight. Super comfy couches tucked in tiny corners make for a perfect mafia-esque rendezvous. The just as funky DJ plays everything from electro to funk, hip hop and jazz to make those beers go down with a groove. Krossener Str. 24, U-Bhf Frankfurter Tor, Tel 9599 9433, Mon-Sat from 20:00, cash only
