Sachiko

Small boats bear plates of delectable sushi creations on a stream around the bar. Grab what looks good, but beware: you might not be able to stop! The Kaiten sushi (4-5 euros per plate) is of the highest quality and irresistible. This small, kid-friendly gem underneath the S-Bahn has been in business for 12 years - one of the first such sushi places in Berlin - with reason. Enjoy the tradition of high quality affordably: Their lunch special is a mere 3 euros per plate! Grolmanstr. 47, S-Bhf Savignyplatz, Tel 313 2282, www.sachikosushi.com, daily 12:00-24:00, from 3-16 euros, credit cards accepted

Shiro I Shiro

At the ‘white castle’ (Shiro I Shiro in Japanese), foam, jellies and ices are flavorintensifying food groups. The presentation is a feast for the eyes, and from your first bite (perhaps foie gras with raspberry-beet root gratinee?) to your main course (try the fawn with cauliflower couscous and sesame-covered roasted cherries) to a refreshing rhubarb-strawberry-champagne soup with woodruff ice cream, your mouth will sing. And their sushi seems straight from the sea. Rosa-Luxemburg-Str. 11, Mitte, U-Bhf Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Tel 9700 4790,www.shiroishiro.com, daily 18:30-late, main courses 20-29 euros, major credit cards accepted

Smartdeli

An amazing range of authentic Japanese food for even the most uncultured palette. There is nothing scary about the delicate and delicious flavours served up from the Smart Deli Project Kitchen. What is scary is the authentic modern Japanese pink plastic décor, so take along a high tolerance for Hello Kitty. Grünberger Str. 90, U-Bhf Samariter Str., Tel 2068 7037, www.smartdeli.de, Mon-Sat 12:00-20:00, from 4-6.95 euros, cash only

Sushi Circle

Sushi Ishin

Ishin’s off Friedrichstrasse is hopping at lunchtime, when businesspeople wait in the (luckily) snappy-moving line to scarf down a happy hour sushi special. (Happy hour is five hours long, and on Wednesday and Saturday lasts all day.) This Japanese-owned and run eatery’s rapidfire delivery and turnover doesn’t compromise the food: The fish is fresh, the rice perfect, the simple rice bowls well priced and filling, and you get free green tea to wash it all down. A perfect quick pickup lunch when you’re worn out from Friedrichstrasse or Unter den Linden. Mittelstr. 24, S+U-Bhf Friedrichstr., Tel 2067 4829, www.ishin.de, Mon-Sat 11:00-20:00, from 2.50-15 euros, cash only. Other locations: Steglitz, Mitte and Wilmersdorf
