Unique pasta and lavish antipasti plates are offered at this new gourmet Greek-owned coffee shop/deli. The secret? High quality local and organic ingredients prepared with flair according to season, market, and the phenomenal Anthi Lyda Galinou’s mood of the day. The wines, oils and salts (from Greece, Portugal, France or Italy) are also available to take away as well as the delicious olives and house caviars (try the caper one!), salami (donkey!) and cheeses that make up the antipasti plate. The pasta is made fresh daily and served with a choice of velvety tomato succo or the pesto del giorno. Try the outstanding wild herb salad with caramelized onions and cherry tomatoes … lounge under the large red parasols - another piece of the tarte du jour maybe? This is food prepared with love!

This small upscale Imbiss on the corner of Choriner Strasse and Schönhauser Allee is shooting for the pancakes of Central Europe, or Palatschinken, as they’re called in Austria. Similar to thin-skinned French crepes, they come with a large selection of fillings such as serrano ham with Emmental, pesto and basil or, more unusual, Hungarian salami and Camembert. The sweet options are endless and somewhat bombastic, with complex mixed of ingredients including marshmallow, vanilla pudding, ice cream, ultra-sweet decorative syrups, melted milk chocolate and a mysterious homemade strawberry-sauce - the specialty of the house. It all looks amazing. ‘Why do it simply when one can be complicated’ seems to be the spirit of the place. We applaud the initiative and recommend the standards: sugar, applesauce or Nutella, while still longing for a real creperie in Berlin. Schönhauser Allee 155, U-Bhf Eberswalder Str., Tel 4470 2783, daily 11:00-23:00, from 2-7 euros, cash onl

The new location for Milch Halle boasts an open-spaced, fresh and playful café gazing out over a grassy square, next to a children’s playground. The rustic interior is cow-themed (like the café’s concept) in black and white and filled with a range of soya/organic goodies for sale. This kid-friendly eatery offers fresh, homemade treats such as the top-secret recipe Birchermuesli (2.90/4.60 euros), a daily selection of quiche (2.50 euros), sandwiches, soups and pasta salads and a wide range of homemade waffles. Try the best-selling banana/Nutella one (2.50 euros). For a summer taste, check out their freshly squeezed, chopped and blended smoothies - a fantastic healthy pit stop for lunch. /SR

Inconspicuously located on a nasty stretch of Schönhauser Allee, it’s easy to miss, but don’t! This is P’Berg’s most gourmet establishment. Homemade everything (even the bread) and bold creativity (think cured lamb with fresh goat cheese, fennel and mango) are the pillars of the two daily-changing three- to four-course set menus that boast only high-quality ingredients (no preservatives) and happy meats (tender, amazing): one regional, the other ’southern’ inspired. Don’t agonise, just opt for either - it is all delicious. (There’s always a vegetarian alternative and even a vegan one - just call before!)

Did you notice? A couple of years ago, all Asian restaurants boasted Thai food, today it seems more fashionable to haul up the Vietnamese flag, flavours and colours … A healthy break from the generic coco-based curry and heavy egg noodles - more fresh herbs, less oil! At Mr. Long, you’ll find the neighbourhood’s best Vietnamese food, from rice noodlebased dishes and refreshing rice-paper rolls to exotic salads (lotus and chicken, green mango with king-size shrimps) and fragrant jumbo soups. Vegans will enjoy the impressive bowl of Vietnamese herbs on a bed of rice or glass noodles mixed in a hot garlic sauce and topped with fresh tofu. Others may risk the spicy frogs’ legs or the festive hot pots (hot!).
