Taxis are not always easy to find when you want one, though there are ranks in central areas and near stations. Fares cost around 2.50 euros per pick-up then 1.53 euros per km. Driving in Berlin’s Green Zone

Since the beginning of 2008, the inner city within the S-Bahn ring has been a designated ‘Green Zone’ (Umweltzone), meaning all cars must carry a green, yellow or red sticker - depending on their emissions class. From January 1, 2009 all cars with yellow and red stickers will be banned from the Green Zone. His quality consciousness also applies to the Tuesday film nights, when you can sit back in a Chesterfield sofa with a glass of wine and enjoy two ‘art house films, not blockbusters’, on a pulled-down screen.

Walking into Another Country in Kreuzberg is like walking into the living room of someone who wasn’t expecting company; a comfy mess of chairs, books and coffee mugs. Maverick Alan Raphaeline considers his second-hand shop more of a library; if you choose to return a book you will get your money minus €1.50 back. Some books are not even for sale and are only available for reading in the shop. This goes especially his large science fiction collection in the basement. Alan stocks a broad of fiction, but especially crime and sci-fi. All events are very social, with a weekly film night, TV-night and dinner night. Dodoos Palatschinken Bar

This small upscale Imbiss on the corner of Choriner Strasse and Schönhauser Allee is shooting for the pancakes of Central Europe, or Palatschinken, as they’re called in Austria. Similar to thin-skinned French crepes, they come with a large selection of fillings such as serrano ham with Emmental, pesto and basil or, more unusual, Hungarian salami and Camembert. The sweet options are endless and somewhat bombastic, with complex mixed of ingredients including marshmallow, vanilla pudding, ice cream, ultra-sweet decorative syrups, melted milk chocolate and a mysterious homemade strawberry-sauce - the specialty of the house. It all looks amazing. ‘Why do it simply when one can be complicated’ seems to be the spirit of the place.
